Just a few days after the longest night of the year, the holiday season acts as a beacon of light to our True North family. This morning, members of our friendly staff worked together in the kitchen preparing a home cooked meal to celebrate the holidays. As they moved about indoors, the final snowflakes from last night’s storm danced their way to the thick white blanket that covers the rolling Vermont hills outside.
Up one of those hills, groups of True North students hurried to complete their preparations for the holiday celebration. Students tightened up their snowshoes and worked together to collect water from a nearby stream as well as wood for their fire. They created a plan with their guides to finish everything in time for the meal to be delivered.
As students ran laughing through the fresh snow to collect their holiday feast, the sun broke through the clouds and illuminated the dazzling beauty of their surroundings. A few students and their guides took a minute to stop and appreciate the towering snow-covered evergreens together.
The moment was incredibly peaceful. Is this not, after all, what the holidays are meant for? Taking the time to celebrate the simple pleasures of our life; the comfort of a fresh cooked meal, the warmth of a wood stove, and the companionship of those close to us.
A journey at True North is filled with challenges, accomplishments, mistakes, growth, and progress. As we come to the end of the calendar year, it is important that we look back. Not just to learn from our toughest moments, but to celebrate each of our triumphs and all that we are grateful for.
