As you arrive here in the Mad River Valley, the most prominent feature you cannot miss is our lush green mountains. We have an abundance of nature’s splendor, wide open vistas and breathtaking views as far as the eye can see. Let’s first get you settled into one of the many lodging options we have here in the Mad River Valley. For unprecedented luxury there is the Pitcher Inn, a Relais & Chateaux hotel nestled in the charming village of Warren, Vermont. The well-appointed suites and guest rooms, fine dining and attentive staff make this a truly five-star option. Just up the mountain road is the Clay Brook Hotel and residences nestled, slope side at Sugarbush Ski Resort. The ski area comes alive in the summer months with mountain biking, hiking and special events such a craft beer, music and art festivals. Rumbles kitchen is the on-site dining option with a large bar and spacious patio to take in the high-altitude sunshine.
If closeness to our headquarters is what you desire, then the Feather Bed Inn, Tucker Hill Inn, Hyde Away Inn and the Inn at the Round Barn are all within a 5-mile radius. Heading towards Mad River Glen with its famous moniker Ski It If You Can, is the Mad River Barn. This family-friendly Inn has onsite dining as well and an amazing breakfast included in your stay. Their game room, deck and gorgeous grounds make it a favorite for travelers and locals alike. These are all wonderful and cozy accommodations that we highly recommend.
If distance to the interstate or airport is more what you are looking for the newly opened Fairfield Inn & Suites in Waterbury is where you should hang your hat for the night. It’s a big hotel chain with the feel of a small Inn. Waterbury hosts the famous Ben & Jerry’s Factory tour, Alchemist Brewery, Green Mountain Coffee Visitor Center and Camel’s Hump & Little River State Parks. Whether you are on your way to or from True North, making a pit stop in this quintessential Vermont town will not disappoint.
If you’re here during the hot summer months, plan to cool off in the many watering holes our valley offers. In Waitsfield head to the Covered Bridge where you will find ample parking, local shops and the always delicious Sweet Spot. Grab breakfast, lunch, a coffee, pastry, ice cream or even a cocktail! And don’t forget to check out The Artisan’s Gallery which has local artist’s ceramics, glassware, art, woodcrafts and so many other amazingly talented artist’s wares! Forty Bridge is an Up-scale women’s clothing boutique that rivals any in Boston or Manhattan.
Upriver a bit is the Lareau swimming hole, across the street from American Flatbread. More than a restaurant, this is an experience! Your best bet is to stop in at 3:45pm, get in line and get yourself on “the list” and while you wait you can try a local Vermont beer and take in the non-stop action that surrounds this little gem. Are you into horseback riding? Near Waitsfield is the Vermont Icelandic Horse Farm. They offer full-day and half-day trail rides. Rides and treks are by advance reservation, but you’re welcome to visit the farm any time and see the extraordinary horses.
At the southern tip of our valley is the quaint village of Warren. Grab a picnic lunch from the “Almost World Famous” Warren Store deli and head south on route 100 to the Warren Falls, just a few miles south of the Village. This famous swimming hole has many pools and rambles through the rocks down to a sandy bottomed beach below. It is worth the hike in to see this stunning natural beauty. Also in Warren are the Blueberry Lake Mountain biking trails offering 5 miles of very beginner-friendly singletrack. Rent bikes at Stark Mountain Bike Works (just around the corner from True North Headquarters).
Within walking distance of True North Headquarters are several other great spots to cool off, but since we prefer not to share these secret spots publicly, just stop by my desk and we’d be more than happy to share our favorites! After you have cooled off, enjoy one of the many dining options that you can walk to from our offices. Directly across the street is The Blue Stone, serving up pizzas, sandwiches and salads, as well as having many local beers on tap! Just up the road is the Big Picture Theater and café, where the new movies are as a good as the food. Grab dinner and a movie, while you watch the movie. Yes, it’s a thing! Insanely popular is Mad Taco and the Canteen Creamery, where local chefs are taking Mexican food and take-out to a whole new level! Peasant on Bridge Street offers authentic Italian inspired dishes that will make you forget you are in Vermont.
