Evan Oppenheimer, LMHC, CCTP-II
Course Leader
Evan (he/him/his) originally hails from Long Island, New York but has always felt that the mountains of Vermont feel most like home. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and subsequent work in the hospitality and human resource fields, Evan went on to earn a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from New York University. Prior to True North, Evan worked as a licensed mental health counselor in New York City, and as a wilderness guide leading individuals and families on adventure-based experiences throughout the United States, Canada, South America and the Middle East. He became the Assistant Director for a community-based organization offering social, vocational, academic and independent living programs for young adults and families.
After nearly 10 years of counseling, guiding and developing programs in New York, Evan moved to Vermont with his family where he combines his passion for wilderness with his calling to help and guide others towards cultivating lives of intention, health, and balance. As a Therapist and Course Leader, Evan empowers young adults to build a healthy self-concept and meaningful connections with others. Evan employs a strength-based, person-centered and experiential approach that fosters open and honest communication, and draws on narrative therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Compassionate Inquiry as a means for understanding pain, building trust and strengthening one’s relationship with the self. Evan teaches sensory, somatic, and neurobiological strategies for regulating the nervous system and utilizes a “wise-mind” skills-based approach for young adults to attain balance in their day to day. As a Level II Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Evan is an expert in trauma-informed approaches that helps young adults identify needs and find success in achieving physical, intellectual, emotional and social balance in their lives. Evan has helped hundreds of individuals who have struggled with emotional imbalance, anxiety, depression and substance abuse, as well as social communication challenges, executive functioning difficulties, learning differences and challenges related to successfully launching into independence and emotional self-sufficiency.
Evan can often be found cooking or playing outside with his dog and family—tending to the family garden and chickens or hiking, biking, paddle boarding, snowboarding in and around the beautiful mountains and lakes of the Northeast.
